Before the Nazis came to pick them up, the mother put on a dress that had many pockets so that she could hide food in them. About a year after they were taken to Auschwitz, the mother died from starvation. She gave almost all of the food to her daughters to keep them healthy. Around three months later the older daughter died of pneumonia at the age of 20. Later that year, the younger daughter died in a gas chamber when she was 13 years old.

Leo Heiman’s father (Dov Heiman) owned a pharmacy in the main street of Warsaw. He sensed danger immediately and his family fled Warsaw to the Russian border, bringing almost nothing with them. They stayed at Dov Heiman’s mother’s factory. The family hoped they would not get hurt because their family made pitch which the germans needed. One day when the children were playing the Germans came. They were fortunate because they hid in the forest every day and the Germans didn’t see them. When they learned that the Germans had come, they left the factory and ran deep into the forest. After a few days they joined a Partisans group. Dov Heiman got many Jews to join the Partisans group. At night that group would ambush and kill German soldiers. One night because shots were heard and he was the leader, Dov Heiman went out from hiding to see what was happening. The German soldiers shot and killed him and immediately ran away. Dov’s wife and Leo buried the body. The group got scared and ran into the forest and split up. After the war Dov’s wife and Leo moved to Israel.

What I learned by watching the movie Safe Haven: The Warsaw Zoo
I learned that after the Nazis bombed Warsaw and the Warsaw Zoo on September 1 1939. Lots of animals were burnt to death and others escaped their cages bleeding and wounded and ran for the street. The animals who escaped were shot by the Polish. By the end of September, the Nazis took over Poland. By December, all Jews must wear a Jewish star on the arm. Violators of the law were shot on sight. You could only get milk if you were 6 months or younger. The Germans created a ghetto for Warsaws Jews. The ghetto had an 8 foot wall with barbed wire at the top. At one point, there were 500,000 Jews in the Ghetto. Children as young as 5 slipped through the hole in the wall to smuggle food but the Germans would kill the children who did that. On October 15, 1941, Hans Frank, Governor General of Poland, issued a decree making the death penalty mandatory for any Jews found on the Arian side of the ghetto. There was also a death penalty for anyone who helped Jews. Zoo Keeper Jan Zabinski became a member of the Polish resistance. By the end of 1939 most of the animals at Warsaw zoo died or ran away. The living ones still at the Warsaw zoo were deported to other zoos. Jan Zabinski was able to get inside the ghetto and eventually set up an escape route for the Jews through the zoo. Fake papers were written so newcomers of the ghetto would be relocated to the Arian side of Warsaw. Eventually the Germans decided to liquidate the ghetto. They decided to liberate the city and began the "Warsaw uprising" where they destroyed almost everything. On the fifth day of the "Warsaw uprising" troops killed thirty thousand people. The polish resistance fought for sixty-three days. At the end of it, almost everyone was captured or killed. All except two of the people at Warsaw zoo survived. Richard Zabinksi, Jan Zabinski's son, survived.

What I learned from watching the movie Paperclips
I learned that Jews would be put into a train car to be transported to a concentration camp. Rail cars had little room but had to fit 100 people! Some people would suffocate before they got to the death camp because with all of the people there would be an oxygen shortage. I also learned that some people were able to escape death camps. I learned that with a little inspiration a lot can happen. I also learned that the paper clips that Norwegians had for resistance were different then the paper clips we have today. I also learned that butterflies are a symbol of the Holocaust because they symbolize hope and the immortal soul living on in a new form.

I learned that the Holocaust was when Hitler and the Nazis killed 11 million people. He wanted to eliminate certain groups of people such as : disabled, gypsies, anyone who opposed him, homosexuals, Jehovah's witnesses and other religions, but especially Jews. Hitler wanted to kill these people because he wanted pure race of Germans, he felt threatened by their power, and he wanted their wealth. The Nazis went about this plan of extermination by first taking away their rights and forcing to Jews to wear a star. Next, they forced these people into ghettos and took their possessions. Soon after, they sent the Jews and other unwanted people to labor camps which were really death camps. The strong people were forced to work and the weak were killed. At the death camps, they were treated horribly and it was extremely difficult to survive. By the end of the war they killed nearly everyone. The madness ended when Hitler lost power and the Allies liberated the people in the camps.
My personal feelings about the Holocaust
I feel that that the Holocaust was one of the worst things that ever happened (including wars). I also feel that if anything like this ever happens again the world will be thrown off balance. It is hard to understand why the Germans followed Hitler or that the Nazis were as heartless as they were. Even though it's hard to learn about the horrible truth that happened to these people, I think that we should learn about the Holocaust so nothing like this ever happens again.
